Stockton, Calif. -- Middle blocker Scott Kevorken posted a season-high 12 kills as No. 9 UC Irvine defeated Pacific, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-16) at the Spanos Center Friday.
Kevorken, a senior, put away a season-best 12 kills to go with two aces and a team-high three blocks. Senior outside hitter Jeremy Dejno led the team with 13 kills, while senior outside hitter Connor Hughes totaled nine kills and a team-high six digs. Freshman Tamir Hershko added six kills, sophomore Kyle Russell hit .625 (5-0-8) and junior Jason Agopian had four kills.
The Anteaters, who improve to 7-6 overall and are 4-5 in the MPSF, hit .481 (51-12-81) and were aggressive from the service line, firing eight aces.
Pacific (1-9, 0-6) was led by Thomas Hodges with a match-high 14 kills. Matthew Dorn added four kills and Tommy Carmody recorded three kills and a game-high five total blocks.
UCI had a kill by Scott Kevorken, an ace by Roberto Frazoni, and kills by Tamir Hershko and Connor Hughes gave UCI a 5-1 lead in the first set. Hershko and Jeremy Dejno led UCI with five kills a piece as the Anteaters won the set 25-20.
Pacific led 4-2 in the second set before UCI went on a 7-1 run, which included three kills and a block by Kevorken, to take a 9-5 advantage. The Tigers tied the set at 22-22 all following two UCI errors, but a Pacific attack that went long was followed by a Kevorken kill and a triple block by Kevorken, Hughes and Kyle Russell closed out the set for UCI, 25-22
Five straight points by UCI opened a 13-8 lead in the third set. Frazzoni would fire back-to-back aces to close out the set 25-16. The Anteaters hit a blazing .720 (20-2-25) in the final set.
UCI will travel to No. 7 Stanford tomorrow to take on the Cardinal at 12:30 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
