Box Score West Lafayette, Ind. – UC Irvine ended the Basketball Travelers International (BTI) Invitational with a 63-55 win against Denver Sunday at Mackey Arena on the Purdue campus.
UCI forward Mokun Fajemisin was named to the all-tournament team after posting her fifth career double-double with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore went 7-12 from the floor and 6-8 from the free throw line.
Sophomore forward Shereen Sutherland scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to help spark the Anteater comeback. She also recorded six rebounds and two blocked shots.
Junior guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton matched her career-best with nine points, all in the first half. Senior Methlyn Onogomuho added six rebounds and six points, while Tierra Hicks totaled five points, Jenny Dee three and Brittany Glassow two points in the victory.
Denver was led by Alecia Epinoza and Jordan Johnston with 11 points each. Espinoza also grabbed 10 rebounds. The Pioneers drained eight three-pointers out of 25 attempts.
UCI's Mokun Fajemisin scored UCI's first six points of the game and put the Anteaters ahead 6-5 at 16:48. Denver would score the next 11 point and open a 16-6 advantage at 13:35. The Pioneers would hold a 35-20 lead following the final media timeout (3:57) before UCI went on a 9-2 run to go in to the locker room trailing 37-29.
UCI scored eight straight points and tied the game on a pair of Fajemisin free throws with 10:46 to play. The teams would trade points until. Shereen Suthland would give UCI the lead (51-50) for the final time at 7:45. Sutherland was key to the UCI comeback, scoring 12 of UCI' 15 points in a five minute span to help the Anteaters open a 58-52 lead at 4:19. Denver closed within 58-55 at 2:17, but UC Irvine would score the final five points of the game to secure the victory.
The Anteaters snap 10-game losing streak and go in to the break with a 2-11 record. Denver also goes to 2-11 on the year.
UCI will take a break for the holidays and return to action traveling to TCU on Dec. 30 for a 5:00 p.m. PT tip.
