Box Score West Lafayette, Ind. – UC Irvine struggled offensively and dropped a 80-42 contest to Wright State at the Basketball Travelers International (BTI) Invitational hosted by Purdue at Mackey Arena.
The Anteaters (1-11) shot .291 (16-55) from the field, which was the second lowest shooting percentage of the year. The 38-point loss was also the second largest margin of defeat.
UCI got 21 of its 42 points from the bench.
For the game, UCI went 6-11 from the free throw line and 4-15 from three. Wright State shot 25-64 from the floor, 24-31 from the line and 6-20 from three-point range. The Raiders out-rebounded the Anteaters 48-36 and WSU used 25 UCI turnovers to score 22 points. UCI's 25 miscues were the second most this season.
Sophomore Jenny Dee knocked down three three-pointers to lead UCI with nine points. Sophomore guard Irene Chavez totaled eight points and Shereen Sutherland added six points. Senior Methlyn Onogomuho had a team-high six rebounds.
Tay'ler Mingo and Breanna Stucke carried Wright State (8-2) with points 22 and 16 points respectively. Lexi Smith recorded 13 points and a game-high 10 points off the bench.
UCI would score eight straight to take a 12-11 lead at 12:01, but Wright State would out-score UCI 30-13 the rest of the half to hold a 41-25 lead at the break.
The Raiders never lost control of the game, out-scoring UCI 39-17 in the second stanza.
UCI ends the BTI Invitational action battling Denver at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.
