San Diego Hands UC Irvine 87-64 Loss

Irvine, Calif. – The University of San Diego shot a blistering 68.2 percent from the field in the second half and handed UC Irvine an 87-64 loss in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center Sunday.

San Diego went 15-22 from the floor in the second period and shot 58.2 percent (32-55) for the game. The Toreros were also 19-23 from the free throw line. The Anteaters shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the field and 13-21 from the charity stripe.

Four Anteaters posted double-digit scoring led by sophomore Shereen Sutherland with a career-high 17 points, hitting 6-9 from the floor. Sophomore Mokun Fajemisin followed with 14 points, a team-high six rebounds and two blocks. Senior Madison McKenney went 5-10 from the field and scored 10 points, while freshman Tierra Hicks recorded a career-high 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.

USD's Malina Hood totaled a game-high 22 points with four three-pointers. Katherine Hamilton came off the bench to pour in 20 points, shooting 8-9 from the field and 4-5 from the line. Maya Hood added 14 points and Brooke Jeiniker recorded a game-best nine rebounds and eight points.

San Diego scored 10 in a row to open up a 24-15 lead in the first half, before a Methlyn Onogomuho jumper stopped the streak at 9:40. A jumper by Mokun Fajemisin brought the Anteaters within seven (32-25) at 4:53, but USD would score another 10 straight and go in to the half with a 46-29 advantage.

The Toreros would score the first basket of the second half and would maintain at least a 17-point lead throughout the second half.

UCI falls to 1-8 overall, while San Diego improves to 9-1 and extends its winning streak to five.

The Anteaters will host Bakersfield Tuesday (Dec. 16) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
