Turnovers Plague UC Irvine In 91-65 Loss To San Jose State

Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine committed 36 turnovers in a 91-65 loss to San Jose State Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

The Anteaters (1-3) were led by forward Mokun Fajemisin who recorded her third career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Her 12 boards tied her career best. The sophomore went 5-9 from the floor and 7-11 from the free throw line plus had two blocks and two steals in 26 minutes of action.

Senior Methlyn Onogomuho recorded nine points and seven rebounds, while Brittany Glassow, Jenny Dee and Ashley Merrill each added eight points.  Sophomore Shereen Suthland contributed six points and seven rebounds.

San Jose State (2-2) had five players in double-digit scoring led by Ta'Rea Cunnigan with 20 points and a team-high six rebounds. Myzhanique Ladd recorded 13 points and matched Cunnigan with six rebounds. Jasmine Smith, Paris Baird and Emily Vann all had 10 points.

UC Irvine out-rebounded the Spartans, 53-40.

San Jose State started quickly with a 14-2 lead and would build the advantage to 25-8 with 10:52 to go in the first half. UCI would score the next 10 points to close within 25-18 at 7:05 and would get within three (35-32) on a Methlyn Onogomuho free throw at 2:49. SJSU would hold a 43-38 lead at the break.

After UCI's Mokun Fajemisin hit a jumper to open the second half, the Spartans out-scored UCI, 17-6 to spread the margin to 60-46 on a Ali Bettencourt three-pointer at 15:21. A pair of Fajemisin free throws narrowed the score to 69-57 before SJSU would go on a 9-0 run to break open the game 78-57 at 7:14.

UCI will travel to South Dakota Monday (Nov. 24) for a 5:00 p.m. PT start.
