No. 14 Anteaters Gain Big West Tournament Berth in 2-0 Loss

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- No. 14 UC Irvine was greeted rudely with a 2-0 defeat at Cal State Northridge Saturday night, but came away with a berth in the Big West Tournament next week becoming the first school from the conference to do so.
UCI (12-4-2, 4-4-1) held a sizable advantage throughout the match outshooting the Matadors by five shots in each half and 22-12 overall, however, CSUN (7-9-2, 3-5-1) continued to flex its hex on the 'Eaters in 2014.
CSUN's first strike came in the 62nd minute when it drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Marino Peixoto's free kick curled around keeper Michael Breslin and in to make it 1-0.
The Matadors returned to the score sheet in the 73rd minute after some fine passing from Nicolas Camacho and David Turcios led to a Sagi Lev-Ari goal to make it 2-0 and finish off the scoring.
UCI made CSUN keeper Adam Hobbs work for his shutout as he needed to stop six shots on the evening, and every Anteater starter posted a shot including one each from the defensive line and multiple shot attempts from the rest of the squad.
Breslin stopped five shots for the Anteater squad that also held the corner kick advantage, 7-4.
UCI's regular season closes on Wednesday, Nov. 5, with a visit from UC Riverside at 7:00 p.m. It will be the sight of senior night for the graduating class with a chance to secure a home match to begin the Big West Tournament or even a second consecutive Big West South title.
