No. 3 Anteaters Lose at UC Riverside, 2-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- A late flurry of goals was finished off by an 89th-minute penalty kick by the Highlanders to upset the third-ranked Anteaters, 2-1, Wednesday night at UCR Soccer Field.
UC Riverside (3-9-2, 2-3-1) came at the Anteaters all night putting up 20 shots on the 'Eater defense, 11 in the first half, however, Michael Breslin made a valiant effort with some highlight-reel saves to keep the match scoreless at the half.
UC Irvine (11-2-2, 3-2-1) made the halftime adjustments and fired the first five shots of the second half. Ashkan Khosravi was up to the task saving a shot, while his defense picked him up later on with a save of its own as the match continued on without a tally.
UCR's Philipp Dominique did something about that volleying home a corner kick in the 79th minute putting the Highlanders up, 1-0.
UCI wasting no time getting the goal back as it usually does earning a penalty kick just 96 seconds later that Eduardo Calzada would convert to tie it, 1-1.
The offenses continued to attack down the stretch, and UCR got the opportunity it needed earning its own penalty shot with 78 seconds left in the match. Hector Romo put it away ultimately closing the book on the match, 2-1.
UCI's loss was just the second of the season, both coming in conference play. Breslin's shutout streak ended at 348 minutes while stopping six shots on the match.
Calzada's goal was his team-leading seventh on the year. He also converted his first PK as the 'Eaters have put away all three PK opportunities on the season.
UC Irvine has another match this week, and it will return home to play it on Saturday, Oct. 25, with a 7:00 p.m. match against Cal State Northridge.
