UC Irvine Rolls Past UC San Diego, 3-0

Irvine, Calif. – Senior Jeremy Dejno led UC Irvine to a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-20, 25-12) over UC San Diego at the Bren Center Friday.

Dejno had a match-high 15 kills, while hitting .667 (15-2-21). The outside hitter also recorded a career-high five block assists. Opposite Zack La Cavera added nine kills and a match-high seven digs. Middle blocker Collin Mehring hit .714 (5-0-7) and had five total blocks, while middle blocker Scott Kevorken hit .667 (6-0-9) with three aces and four blocks. Daniel Stork totaled 29 set assists and four digs. Libero Michael Brinkley added six digs.

UCSD was led by Mike Brunsting with nine kills, six digs and two solo blocks. Nick Iorfino recorded five digs and Garrett Dempsey had 19 set assists.   

Scott Kevorken fired three consecutive aces to get the Anteaters going in the first set, 5-1. UCI would hit .579 (12-1-19) and record five aces as they won the set 25-11.

With the score tied at 18-18 in the second set, UCI went on a 3-0 run that was capped by a Kevorken solo block to take a 21-18 lead. The Anteaters would win the set 25-20 behind five kills by Jeremy Dejno.

The Anteaters led 13-9 before Connor Hughes stepped up to the service line and UCI went on a 9-0 run to open a 22-9 advantage. In the run, UCI had three blocks and three Dejno kills. The Anteaters would close out the match with a 25-12 victory.

UCI goes to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the MPSF, while UCSD falls to 0-9 on the year and 0-8 in the MPSF.

UCI will take on No. 1 UCLA tomorrow (Feb. 1) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
