PLEASANT HILL, Calif. --- UC Irvine sustained its first loss of the season Saturday as the 'Eaters fell to Pepperdine, 8-6, in the NorCal Tournament at Diablo Valley College.
UCI built a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter on two goals each from Mitch Wise and Tyler Mancuso, but the Waves battled back to tie the game at 4-4 by halftime on Luke Hewko's goal with 2:10 remaining in the second quarter.
Alan Robertson opened the scoring in the second half on a goal with 6:33 left in the third quarter to give the seventh-ranked 'Eaters (9-1) a 5-4 lead before 10th-ranked Pepperdine scored the next four goals, the last by Marko Madaras with 2:32 remaining, to give the Waves an 8-5 lead.
UCI's Jared Osborn scored with 53 seconds left in the game to close out the scoring.
The 'Eaters face Diablo Valley College later Saturday afternoon.
