Game Notes: UCI had a season-high six-game win streak snapped in the Saturday loss but rebounded to win its second Big West series.

  • The Anteaters, 18-4 at home, improved to 3-0 in extra-inning affairs and 4-1 in shutouts after Sunday's 2-0 win.
  • UCI is tied for fifth in the Big West at 5-4 with CS Northridge. Cal Poly, UC Riverside and Long Beach State are tied for second at 6-3 behind league leader, Cal State Fullerton (8-1).
  • UCI's pitching staff, under first year head coach, Danny Bibona, dropped its ERA to 2.41 to lead the Big West Conference. UCI has limited teams to 85 runs (77 earned) in 32 games.
  • The staff is second in the league with walks issued at 67 behind the Titans who have given up 52 base on balls.
  • The offense is second in the conference at .289 and third in slugging (.395) and on-base percentage (.367).

MORE RECOGNITION FOR MORALES: A week after earning Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, Andrew Morales was named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year watch list.

  • Morales, who extended his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings after pitching seven shutout innings in the series finale against CSUN, is second in the nation with eight victories.
  • The right-hander owns a 1.56 ERA and is 47th in the country and third in the Big West in that category.
  • He has struck out 42 batters in 52 innings and allowed just nine earned runs in 11 appearances.

BROCK BATTLES BRUINS: Evan Brock will make the start Tuesday against UCLA.

  • The junior made one appearance last week, pitching 2.2 innings in relief at San Diego.
  • Brock struck out four in 2.2 innings while allowing a run on two hits. He entered in the fifth in a two-on, one-out situation and struck out the final two batters of the inning to snuff out the Toreros' rally.
  • Brock has made nine appearances and is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. He has fanned 23 and 26.2 innings and walked just three while giving up eight earned runs.

MERTEN WINS TWICE, SAVES ONE FOR 'EATERS: Mitch Merten factored in all three of UCI's wins last week.

  • The right-hander made the pre-determined start against San Diego and faced the minimum through four innings en route to his first win of the week.
  • Merten then pitched Friday against the Matadors and yielded a hit but struck out the side in the 11th inning and was credited with the winning decision after UCI's walk-off victory.
  • He then finished off the Matadors Sunday, entering in a two-on, no-out situation and retired three straight to keep the tying runs on base. He logged a perfect ninth to post his second save.
  • Merten is 3-1 with a 1.72 ERA. He has posted 15 strikeouts in 15.2 innings and allowed three earned runs while walking three.

SOPHOMORES STANDOUTS: The sophomore duo of Taylor Sparks and Connor Spencer are pacing the Anteater offense with both hitters batting over .400 in four games last week.

  • Sparks nearly hit for the cycle last week against San Diego, going 3 for 4 with three RBI.
  • The third baseman was walked twice intentionally and had an opportunity to accomplish the feat in the ninth but went down swinging.
  • Sparks won the game for the Anteaters in the series opener against Northridge, flaring a pitch to right field to drive in Connor Spencer from first for Sparks' first walk-off hit of the year.
  • He had a third of UCI's six hits in the middle game and has upped his average to .318. Sparks tops the team with 25 RBI and leads the team with six home runs.
  • Sparks was named the College Sports Madness Big West Baseball Player of the Week for his performance.   
  • Spencer hit .467 in four games, posting a perfect 4 for 4 day at San Diego.
  • The first baseman added a hit in each of the next three games and tops the team with 49.
  • Spencer is currently the Big West leader in batting average (.415) and on-base percentage (.496).
  • He is 14th in the nation in batting average and 25th in on-base percentage.
  • Spencer has reached safely in 19 consecutive games to lead the team.

GOTTSCHLING HAS CAREER DAY AT SAN DIEGO: Scott Gottschling hit .400 in four games last week and drove in a career-high four RBI at San Diego.

  • The senior outfielder had three hits and four runs batted against the Toreros.
  • He then added two hits in the series opener against CS Northridge and had one of the team's four hits Saturday.
  • Gottschling, who has been solid in the outfield for UCI, is hitting .260 with 20 hits and seven RBI.

THURMAN, WHITEHOUSE CONTINUE TO STAR IN STARTING ROLES: Neither Andrew Thurman nor Matt Whitehouse were credited with wins last weekend but both continue to move up the ranks nationally.

  • Thurman did not figure in UCI's win Friday despite holding the Matadors to two runs on five hits in 7.2 innings.
  • The right-hander cruised through the first three innings before giving up a two-out RBI hit in the fourth. He worked himself out of trouble in the fifth and would get tagged for the game-tying run in the eighth.
  • Thurman is 3-3 with his 2.24 ERA ranks sixth in the Big West. He has struck out 54 in 56.1 innings.
  • The right-hander has a 4.91 strikeout-to-walk ratio to rank 60th in the nation and is 66th in WHIP.
  • Whitehouse pitched six innings and struck out eighth, surrendering single runs in the third and the seventh.
  • Whitehouse fell to 3-3 in the loss and has 51 strikeouts in 54.1 innings. He has walked just eight
  • Opposing hitters are being held to a .215 average.
  • The lefty is 30th in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 44th in WHIP.

BRUINS BRING No. 11 RANKING: UCLA, currently ranked 11th by Collegiate Baseball,  is 22-10 overall and 7-5 in the Pac-12.

  • Right-hander Cody Poteet is slated to start Tuesday. Poteet is 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA. He has struck out 29 in 36.2 innings while allowing 19 earned runs and walking 16.
  • The Bruins are led offensively by Brian Carroll, who has 33 hits and 25 runs scored.
  • Pat Valaika tops the team with 28 runs batted in to go along with 33 hits and 10 doubles.
  • UCLA owns a 46-27-1 series lead over the Anteaters and won both contests last season.

FAREWELL TOUR FOR TIGERS: Pacific, 9-27 overall and 2-7 in conference action, is in the midst of its final season as a Big West member. The Tigers will become members of the WCC in 2013-14.

  • Pacific is led by Erik Lockwood who is batting .336 with 36 hits and 10 doubles.
  • Dustin Torchio tops the team in RBI with 18 while Tyler Sullivan is the Tigers' speedster with six steals.
  • Pacific has not announced its starting rotation but lefty John Haberman and Kyle Crawford both made starts last weekend.
  • Haberman is 1-3 with a 5.67 ERA and has logged 33.1 innings of work.
  • Crawford 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 31.2 innings.
  • UCI is 36-18 against UOP with the Anteaters coming away with three wins at Cicerone Field last year
