UC IRVINE MEETS RAINBOW WARRIORS SATURDAY
● Third-year head coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad (12-12, 6-5 Big West) meets Hawai'i Saturday evening in Big West Conference action.
● Saturday marks the eighth meeting in the series with UCI leading 4-3. The teams first met in February 1972 and played back-to-back games in December 1972, all Hawai'i wins. UCI has won the last four meetings, 87-82 Dec. 8, 1984, 76-70 Feb. 22, 2009 (BracketBusters game), 80-70 Dec. 2, 200, and 68-64 at the Bren Center Jan. 9 in the first Big West meeting between the schools.
● Junior guard Chris McNealy led the 'Eaters with 15 points off the bench in the Jan. 9 win, sophomore Will Davis II scored 13 points and senior guard Daman Starring 12. Vander Joaquim led Hawai'i with 15 points while Christian Standhardinger added 12 points and 13 boards.
● UCI is coming off a 70-61 loss at Cal State Northridge Thursday night. The 'Eaters led by as many as 17 points (26-9) in the first half, but the Matadors ended the game with a 13-4 run. Starring scored 15 points for UCI, McNealy 12 and freshman guard Alex Young added 10 points and five assists. Michael Wilder had a team-high nine rebounds.
● UCI has seven conference games remaining this season, four at home and three on the road.
● UCI improved to 8-1 at home this season, including 5-0 in Big West games, with a 62-60 win over UC Santa Barbara last Saturday night.
● UCI drew UT Arlington in the Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters and will face the Mavericks Feb. 23 at 5:00 p.m. (CST) at the College Park Center in Arlington, Tex. This will be the first meeting between the schools.
UC IRVINE NOTES
● As of Friday, UCI ranked 16th in the nation in assists per game (16.1), 23rd in field-goal percentage defense (.385) and 30th in assist/turnover ratio (1.28).
● Alex Young ranks 18th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio at 2.71 and Will Davis II is 46th in blocked shots at 2.16 per game.
● For all games, UCI ranks first in the Big West Conference in scoring defense (64.2), field-goal percentage defense (.385), three-point field goal percentage defense (.327), assists per game (16.1) and blocked shots per game (4.4).
● Individually for all games, Alex Young leads the Big West in assist/turnover ratio (2.71). Will Davis II is second in blocked shots per game (2.1) and Daman Starring is fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.426).
● In conference games only, Davis is first in blocked shots per game (2.1), Adam Folker is second in offensive rebounds per game (.3.2), Young is second in assist/turnover ratio (2.9), and Davis (.614) and Folker (.588) rank third and fifth, respectively, in field-goal percentage.
● Will Davis II is 36 of 56 (.643) from the field in the past eight games.
● UCI is 7-0 this season when holding the opposition to under 60 points, 8-2 when leading at halftime and 5-2 when scoring over 70 points. UCI is 8-5 this season when the opponents have shot below 40 percent from the field.
● Senior Daman Starring is the only UCI player averaging in double figures at 13.3 points per game, leading the team in scoring in 11 games this season and recording five 20-point games.
● Senior post Adam Folker has 562 career rebounds to rank 15th in the Anteater record book.
● Senior Michael Wilder has 945 points and 522 rebounds in his UCI career. His 522 career boards rank 18th in Anteater history. Fifteen previous UCI players have scored 1,000 points and grabbed 500 rebounds in their careers.
● Wilder ranks No. 4 in UCI history with 193 career threes and Starring is 10th with 126. Michael Hunter (2006-10) is the school's career leader with 236 threes.
A LOOK AT HAWAI'I
● Third-year head coach Gib Arnold's Rainbow Warriors are 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the Big West, winning their last four games including 94-73 over conference leader Long Beach State Thursday night.
● Prior to Thursday's win over Long Beach State, Hawai'i won consecutive road games over UC Santa Barbara (78-73), UC Riverside (72-68) and Cal State Fullerton (77-75).
● Christian Standhardinger leads the Warriors at 16.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
● Vander Joaquim is averaging 14.0 points and also averages 8.0 boards per contest.
