Box Score Missoula, MT – Montana captured the Lady Griz Classic title with a 71-48 victory over UC Irvine in Dahlberg Arena Saturday.
UCI goes to 5-4 overall, while Montana improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 at home. With the victory, Montana is now 63-3 over 33 years of the tournament, winning 28 straight games at the Lady Griz Classic.
UCI senior forward Camille Buckley was named to the all-tournament team after recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Jasmine Bernard came off the bench to add 10 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Madison McKenney had nine points in her first start of the season. .Junior forward Methlyn Onogomuho grabbed eight rebounds and freshman guard Irene Chavez had six points on two three-pointers.
Montana was led by Torry Hill with 16 points followed by Jordan Sullivan and Hannah Doran with 11 points each. Sullivan also had a team-high eight rebounds and was named the tournament MVP. Kellie was named to the all-tournament with nine points and seven rebounds.
Montana took control quickly opening an 8-0 lead then a 22-6 advantage with 12:48 to go in the first half. The Lady Griz would hold a 31-15 lead before the Anteaters would rally going on a 6-0 run to close within 31-21 on a Jazmyne White basket at 4:12. Montana would score the final six points of the half and take a 37-21 lead at the intermission.
UCI's Madison McKenney hit back-to-back threes to end a 9-5 spurt by the Anteaters at 17:25, narrowing the margin to 42-30. A Jasmine Bernard jumper at 15:10 maintained the 12-point deficit, but that would be as close as UCI would get the rest of the game as the Lady Griz would score the next nine points to open a 21-point gap (55-34) with 12:12 remaining.
UCI will ends its nine game road swing, travelng to Sacramento State next Saturday (Dec. 14) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
