Box Score Malibu, Calif. -- Pepperdine controlled the glass and had a balanced scoring attack as they beat UC Irvine, 76-59 at Firestone Fieldhouse Thursday.
The Anteaters even their record at 1-1, while Pepperdine goes to 2-1.
Pepperdine lead 35-23 at the half after out-rebounding UCI, 30-18 in the first 20 minutes. The Waves led by 18 (34-16) with two minutes remaining before the Anteaters rallied to end the half scoring seven of the last nine points. UCI shot 24.1 percent (7-29) from the floor in the half.
Lauren Spinazze hit back-to-back three-pointers to narrow the deficit to 40-32 with 17:21 left, but Pepperdine would score 12 straight to open the gap back to 52-32 with 13:06 remaining. .The Anteaters would only get as close as 16 (74-58) on a Jasmine Bernard jumper at 1:06.
Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto led UCI with 14 points, followed by Big West Player of the Week Camille Buckley who scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Seniors Jasmine Bernard, Lauren Spinazze and Vanessa Aguilar each added six points. Forward Jazmyne White grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Anteaters shot 30.6 percent (19-62) from the floor and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the free throw line. UCI drained seven three-pointers. Pepperdine controlled the glass out-rebounding UCI, 48-39.
Pepperdine was led by Ea Shoushtari with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. Keitra Wallace had 17 points, Bria Richardson had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Tessa Emerson recorded 10 points in the win. The Waves shot 41.2 percent (28-68) from the field and 80 percent (16-20) from the line.
UCI will travel to Nevada on Sunday (Nov. 17) for a 2:00 p.m. game.
