Irvine, Calif. -- Reigning National Champion UC Irvine will start the year with an important non-conference road trip before beginning the grueling Mountain Pacific Sports Federation slate.
"This will be the longest and most challenging non-conference schedule that I have been a part of at UC Irvine," head coach David Kniffin said. "We are tested every night we suit up for a match in the MPSF, so the adversity and challenges I expect in the Midwest before the conference begins will be a nice compliment to the rough road we have ahead."
It's an early beginning to the 2013-14 season for UCI as the Anteaters travel to Concordia on Dec. 20 before dates with the Alumni on Dec.21 and the University of British Columbia and Red Deer from Canada on Dec. 28.
UC Irvine is making its first Midwest swing beginning Jan. 1 at Lewis then moves to Loyola on Jan. 2. The Anteaters will battle the Ramblers in Gentile Arena, the site of the 2014 NCAA Championship on May 1 and 3. UCI visits Ball State on Jan. 4 before heading back west to open MPSF play visiting Pepperdine Jan. 10 and USC on Jan. 14.
A re-match of the 2013 National Championship will take place on Jan. 17 as the Anteaters battle BYU at the Bren Center before they take on Cal Baptist Jan. 18.
UCI travels to UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 25 then up the 405 freeway to face UCLA on Jan. 27. After hosting UC San Diego on Jan. 31, UCI tackles the Bruins again on Feb. 1 in Irvine.
The Anteaters will travel to Pacific (Feb. 7) and Stanford (Feb. 8) then entertain USC on Feb. 13 and Pepperdine on Feb. 14.
Matches at Long Beach State (Feb. 19) and Cal State Northridge (Feb. 21) proceed a home contest against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 28. Four road matches at Hawaii (Mar. 7 & 9), Cal Baptist (Mar. 12) and BYU (Mar. 14) will take place before the Anteaters close out the regular season with four of the last five matches at the Bren Center.
The Anteaters will host Cal State Northridge on Mar. 26 then Long Beach State in a Black & Blue Rivalry Series match presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach on Mar. 28. Following a road test at UC San Diego (Apr. 5), UCI will host Pacific (Apr. 11) and Stanford (Apr. 12).
The matches at USC, UCLA and Stanford will be televised by the Pac-12Network.
"Our culture remains as strong as ever," Kniffin added. "Talent comes and goes with each incoming and graduating class and I'm curious to see what we can do this year."
UCI, who has won the last two NCAA Championships and four of the last seven titles, return All-Americans Michael Brinkley and Collin Mehring as well as All-MPSF honoree Scott Kevorken and NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player Connor Hughes. Seniors Jeremy Dejno and Daniel Stork, junior Zack La Cavera and sophomore Kyle Russell also return in 2014.
