Honolulu, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii capitalized on UC Irvine turnovers on its way to a 56-46 victory at the Stan Sheriff Center Wednesday.
Hawaii took advantage of 16 UCI turnovers, scoring 17 of its points on Anteater miscues.
UCI forward Jasmine Bernard led the Anteaters with 16 points in 21 minutes of action.
Guard Jennifer Tsurumoto topped the squad in rebounding with a career-high nine rebounds to go with eight points. Forward Methlyn Onogomuho had six points and three steals, while Cheyenne Cathey and Mokun Fajemisin each added four points with Fajemisin swatting two blocks and a steal in her first collegiate start.
Hawaii was led by Ashleigh Karaitiana with 16 points. Kamilah Martin recorded eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Hawaii had at least one point from 11 different players.
Hawaii had it's largest lead of six three times in the first half, the last at 2:14 when the Rainbow Wahine had two consecutive rebound put-backs to take a 24-18 lead. A layup by UCI Cheyene Cathey closed out the half with Hawaii leading 24-20.
A jumper by Mokun Fajemisin narrowed the Hawaii lead to 34-30 at 13:14, but the Rainbow Wahine would score the next four straight to push the advantage back to 38-30 with 11:58 remaining in the game. UCI closed to five (46-41) with 5:40 left, but Hawaii answered again, scoring the next five points to bring the cushion back to nine (50-41) with 3:40 left. UCI would get no closer than seven the rest of the game.
Hawaii shot 54.5 percent (12-22) from the field in the second half and 41.8 percent (23-55) for the game. The Anteaters shot 29.1 percent (16-55) in the game and just 26.9 (7-26) in the second half.
UCI falls to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big West, while Hawaii is 6-8 on the year and 2-1 in league action. The Anteaters will travel to Cal State Northridge Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game in the Matadome.
