Box Score Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine started slow and could not recover as Cal Poly beat the Anteaters, 64-46 at the Bren Events Center Saturday.
UCI is still looking for its first conference win (0-2) and goes to 4-10 overall. The 18-point loss is tied for the worst this season as the Anteaters fell 73-55 to Idaho on Dec. 5. Cal Poly improves to 7-6 and 1-1 in the Big West.
UCI scored its first point of the game at the 12:02 mark of the first half, but Cal Poly had built a 13-2 lead at that point. The Mustangs would score seven straight to extend the lead to 28-8 at 6:28. Cal Poly would hold its largest lead of 21 at half time, 36-15.
After Cal Poly led 62-34 with 7:06 remaining, UCI would score the next eight points, the last a free throw by Cheyenne Cathey with 54 seconds left, to make the score 62-42. Following a layup by Cal Poly's Ariana Elegado, a free throw by Jasmine Bernard and a three-pointer by Pernilla Hanson closed out the scoring, 64-46.
UCI's 15 first half points are the fewest scored in a half since the Anteaters scored 14 at Wyoming on Dec. 21, 2011. Cal Poly's Ariana Elegado went 5-7 from three-point range and matched the Anteaters with 15 first half points.
UCI junior forward Jasmine Bernard came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points, going 5-9 from the floor. Forward Lauren Spinazze had eight points, while guard Vanessa Aguilar recorded six points, which tied her career-high. UCI's starting five managed just 10 points, including six points by forward Camille Buckley who also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
UCI shot 28.3 percent (15-53) from the floor, the third worst shooting performance of the year. Cal Poly was 27-59 (45.8%) from the field, knocking down eight three-pointers to UCI's 4. The Mustangs out-rebounded UCI, 45-32.
Cal Poly was led by Ariana Elegado with a game-high 20 points. The guard was 7-14 from the floor and 6-9 in three-pointers. Brittany Woodward totaled 15 points and seven rebounds and Molly Schlemer had 10 points and seven rebounds. Jonae Ervin also recorded seven rebounds.
UC Irvine will travel to Hawaii on Wednesday (Jan. 9) for a 9:00 p.m. PT start.
