'EATERS, 49ERS MEET FOR 90TH TIME SATURDAY

● Third-year head coach Russell Turner's UC Irvine squad (10-10, 4-3 Big West) faces Big West-leading Long Beach State in a "Black & Blue" rivalry game Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

● The Long Beach State series is the second-longest for UCI, which trails the 49ers, 56-33, dating back to the first meeting in 1965.

● Long Beach State has won the past four meetings with UCI, including all three last season.  The 'Eaters' last win over the 49ers was 86-76 in the Bren Center Jan. 22, 2011.  

● UCI's last victory in the Walter Pyramid was 70-48 Feb. 2, 2008, as Darren Fells had 17 points and 11 rebounds.   Michael Hunter added 16 points.

● The 'Eaters' three-game winning streak was stopped at UC Riverside, 68-58, last Saturday night.  Senior guard Daman Starring scored a game-high 22 points for UCI, including 20 in the second half.

● Senior Michael Wilder, who had nine rebounds at Riverside, became the 19th member of the UCI 500-rebound club as he now has 503.

● UCI's 27-point win over Fullerton (92-65) Jan. 17 was the largest margin of victory for the Anteaters in the 96-game series with the Titans.

● Junior guard Chris McNealy scored 21 points off the bench in the win at Fullerton.  McNealy was 7 of 13 from the field, including 5 of 8 on threes, and added six assists, five rebounds and two steals.  He has scored 45 points in his last two games versus Fullerton.


UC IRVINE NOTES

● As of Monday (of 345 NCAA Division I teams), UCI ranked 10th in the nation in assists per game (17.1), 19th in field-goal percentage defense (.376) and 24th in assist/turnover ratio (1.34).

● For all games, UCI ranks first in the Big West Conference in scoring defense (64.3), field-goal percentage defense (.376), three-point field goal percentage defense (.313), assists per game (17.1) and blocked shots per game (4.9).

● Individually for all games, Alex Young leads the Big West in assist/turnover ratio (2.7) and Travis Souza is first in three-point field goal percentage (.577).  Will Davis II is second in blocked shots per game (2.3) and Adam Folker is third in field-goal percentage (.571).

● In conference games only, junior guard Chris McNealy leads the Big West in assist/turnover ratio (4.4), Davis II is second in blocked shots per game (2.5), and Folker is third in offensive rebounds per game (3.4) and fourth in rebounding (7.3).  In field-goal percentage, Folker (.604) and Davis II (.600) rank fourth and fifth, respectively.

Alex Young ranks 24th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio at 2.7.

● UCI has played 13 of its 20 games this season away from Irvine.

● UCI is 6-0 this season when holding the opposition to under 60 points, 7-1 when leading at halftime and 5-2 when scoring over 70 points.

● No UCI opponent has shot 50 percent or better from the field this season and 11 opponents have shot below 40 percent.

● UCI, after shooting 59.6 percent from the field in the previous two games, shot a season-low 31.7 percent in last Saturday's loss at UC Riverside.

● Senior Daman Starring is the only UCI player averaging in double figures at 14.1 points per game, leading the team in scoring in 10 games this season.  Starring has averaged 16.4 points over the last eight games.  He ranks fifth in the Big West (for all games) in three-point field goal percentage at .457. 

● Senior post Adam Folker has 541 career rebounds to rank 16th in the Anteater record book.

● Senior Michael Wilder has 920 points and 503 rebounds in his UCI career.  His 503 career boards rank 19th in Anteater history.  Fifteen previous UCI players have scored 1,000 points and grabbed 500 rebounds in their careers.

● Wilder ranks No. 4 in UCI history with 188 career threes and senior Daman Starring is 10th with 122.  Michael Hunter (2006-10) is the school's career leader with 236 threes.


A LOOK AT LONG BEACH STATE

● Sixth-year head coach Dan Monson's 49ers are 10-8 overall and lead the Big West with a 6-1 mark, entering Saturday's game with a five-game winning streak.

● Long Beach State has won its last 20 Big West games played in the Walter Pyramid.

● Senior James Ennis leads the 49ers in scoring (17.0) and rebounding (7.2).

● Sophomore Mike Caffey is averaging 12.5 points and 4.4 assists per game.

● Juniors Keala King and Tony Freeland are each averaging 10.1 points per game.
