Rex Nelson, Sam Hyams Lead 'Eaters at adidas/UCI Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. --- Seniors Rex Nelson and Sam Hyams led UC Irvine in the season-opening adidas/UCI Invitational at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields Saturday morning.
Nelson finished second in the 229-runner field with a time of 24:57.5 over the 8,000-meter course. Hyams placed fifth in 25:19.7.
Riley Martin was the third Anteater across the finish line in 31st place (26:20.7), Steven Melena was 33rd (26:24.4), Alex Tebbe 50th (26:50.5), Amir Shirif 61st (26:59.1) and Matt Neev 68th (27:07.2) to round out UCI's top seven.
John Gilbertson of The Master's College was the individual champion in 24:41.4.
The 'Eaters finished fourth in the team competition with 99 points. Cal State San Marcos won the meet with 56 points, UC San Diego was second with 82 and Central Arizona third with 90 points.
UCI returns to action Sept. 29 with runners competing at the Stanford Invitational and Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
