SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- UC Irvine capitalized on a seven-goal outburst in the third quarter to defeat No. 4 California, 13-11, in the SoCal Tournament at Dos Pueblos High School Saturday.
With the victory, UCI (12-1) will face top-ranked USC in a semifinal game Sunday at 10:40 a.m. at Dos Pueblos High.
Trailing 6-5 at halftime, the fifth-ranked 'Eaters outscored the Bears, 7-2, in the third quarter to take a 12-8 lead entering the final period.
In the third quarter, Bojan Hrlec scored three goals while Mitch Wise and Jacob Mourer had two apiece. Mourer scored to tie the game at 6-6 with Hrlec and Wise following on consecutive goals to give the 'Eaters an 8-6 lead.
Cal cut the margin to 8-7 before Hrlec and Mourer answered to put UCI up 10-7. After Cal scored to pull within 10-8, Wise and Hrlec scored late in the quarter for the 12-8 UCI lead.
The Bears pulled to within 12-10 in the fourth quarter before Pablo Carballo scored for the 'Eaters with 1:56 left to help seal the victory.
For the game, Hrlec led UCI with four goals, Mourer had three, and Wise and Chris Swieca added two each.
Collin Smith led Cal with three goals.
