IRVINE, Calif. --- Anteater alumnus, Ben Orloff (2006-09), the 2009 Big West Player of the Year, has been named to Israel's 28-man roster for the World Baseball Classic qualifying round.
Orloff joins former MLB all-star Shawn Green and outfielder Gabe Kapler, both of whom will act as player-coaches.
Orloff, who was drafted in the ninth round by the Houston Astros in 2009, is UC Irvine's all-time leader in at-bats (877), games played (241), runs scored (178) and hits (281). He also is second all-time in stolen bases with 62 and became the only Anteater to come away with the Brooks Wallace Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate shortstop. A three-time All-American, Orloff also is an ABCA Gold Glove winner and helped UC Irvine to four NCAA tournament berths, including the program's first College World Series appearance in 2007, where the team finished tied for third.
Team Israel handed South Africa a 7-3 loss on the first day of competition and a win over Spain today guarantees Israel a spot in Sunday's final (2 p.m. PT). The loser must face the winner of France-South Africa tonight for the chance to play in the final in this modified double-elimination tournament.
