LONDON --- UC Irvine alum Ryan Bailey scored his 10th goal of the 2012 London Games, but the U.S. Olympic men's water polo team fell to Croatia, 8-2 in a quarterfinal game Wednesday.
With the loss, the Americans will face Spain in a fifth-place bracket semifinal Friday.
On Wednesday, the Croatians built a 5-0 halftime lead before Bailey put the U.S. on the board with a goal at the 5:33 mark of the third quarter. Peter Varellas scored just over two minutes later for the final American goal.
Bailey, a four-time All-American at UCI and 1998 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year, is one of the first two male athletes (along with Tony Azevedo) in USA Water Polo history to compete in four Olympics.
'Eater alum Jeff Powers is making his third appearance in the Olympics and Tim Hutten his second. They were members of the 2008 American squad that won silver in Beijing.
Hutten was the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award given annually to the top player in the NCAA.
