May 31, 2012 | Men's Track & Field
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine Athletics recognized Jacob Yowell and Charles Jock, as well as six other student-athletes from the men's track and field program, at the annual Salute to Scholar-Athletes banquet Wednesday night at the Bren Events Center.
Yowell, a senior, received an Academic Achievement Award from the UCI Admissions Office. His top times this season were 13.91 in the 110 hurdles (No. 2 in UCI history) and 51.71 in the 400 hurdles. Yowell won the 110 hurdles at the Big West Championships and finished second in the 400 hurdles. He also competed on the UCI 4x400 relay that won the conference title for the fourth straight year. Yowell advanced to the NCAA West Preliminary Round in both hurdles events as well as the relay.
Jock, also a senior, received a Senior Male Athletic Performance Award Wednesday and was also UCI's Outstanding Student-Athlete at the Lauds & Laurels ceremony earlier this month. The Big West champion in the 800 meters has the top time in the U.S. this season (1:44.75) and will compete at the NCAA Championships next week (June 6-9) in Des Moines, Iowa. He will run at the USA Olympic Trials later in June at Eugene, Ore.
Six other members of the UCI team were recognized as Scholar-Athletes for 2011-12. This year's list of 113 brings UCI's total to 3,616 since 1983.
The honorees from men's track and field are: Stephen Brown, Alvin Cheng, Tommy Hamm, Mike Kennedy, Riley Martin and Trevor Wightman.
Requirements for this award include maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA) over the previous three quarters or a 3.2 GPA over two quarters for freshmen and transfers. Student-athletes must also earn letters in their sports.
The Scholar-Athlete award was implemented by the Big West Conference to honor those student-athletes that have maintained a high level of scholastic excellence while participating in intercollegiate athletics. UCI expanded the award to include teams that do not participate in Big West-sponsored sports.
