IRVINE, Calif. --- The Big West Defensive Player of the Year award was captured by an Anteater for the second consecutive year after D.J. Crumlich (Irvine/HS) received the accolade today and headlines a list of six UC Irvine players honored by the conference coaches
Crumlich, also voted to the all-conference second-team for the second consecutive year, was second in the conference in assists with 160 and seventh after fielding 28 double plays. He was also sixth in the Big West in hits with 72 and doubles with 16. He batted .324 and paced the Anteaters with 39 runs scored.
Andrew Thurman (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) was a first-team choice after a stellar year in which he was 8-3 on the mound and hurled four complete games. The right-hander pitched three complete game shutouts, becoming just the second Anteater to accomplish the feat and also dealt a no-hitter against Long Beach State in the opening game of the series. Thurman won six in a row on the mound and ended the year with a 2.66 ERA, placing him sixth in the Big West. He was second in the league after holding the opposition to a .195 batting average and he tied for sixth with 69 strikeouts.
Joining Crumlich on the second team was Christian Ramirez (Santa Ana/Cypress College) who shared the batting title with the shortstop at .324. Ramirez had 58 hits, including nine doubles and tied for fourth in the Big West with four triples to go along with 21 RBI. He boasted a .991 fielding percentage to place eighth in the conference, committing just one error in 54 games.
Seniors Jordan Fox (Hacienda Heights/Bishop Amat HS) and Tommy Reyes (Rancho Cucamonga/Bishop Amat HS) both picked up honorable mention nods. Fox was fourth in the Big West and led UCI with 37 RBI and tied for second in the league with five triples. He tied for ninth in hits with 68 while hitting .322.
Reyes, a 2009 Big West Honorable Mention recipient, posted a .292 average and was second on the team with 13 doubles and 31 RBI. Reyes was voted a Big West Player of the Week once this year, had a pair of triples and two home runs while scoring 36 runs to sit 10th in the conference. He led UCI with 33 base on balls and ended his career fifth in the UCI records with 94 walks.
Race Parmenter (Huntington Beach/Golden West College) rounds out the honorable mention honorees after tying for third in the Big West with eight saves. Six of those saves came in conference games and he finished 18 games this season, sixth-best among the Big West leaders. The right-hander was second on the team with 22 appearances and struck out 28 in 27.2 innings of work. Parmenter allowed just seven earned runs and held a 2.28 ERA.
UC Irvine finished the year 31-25 overall and the Anteaters have now recorded 30 or more wins in nine of the last 11 seasons.
