Anteaters 'A' Game Denies Aggies

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine started hot and subdued the Aggies attack with a 10-4 win Saturday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Anteaters commanded the first period with three goals including one each from the Croghan sisters. Kate Avetoom (Tustin / Foothill HS) and the UCI (20-5, 3-0) defense stopped two pivotal power plays for UC Davis (13-12, 1-1) to hold them scoreless after one, 3-0.

The scoring barrage came in the second period as the squads would combine to score eight of the game's 14 goals. UCI went up to 5-0 before UC Davis finally got on the board, but the Anteaters wouldn't allow them closer than four goals. Katie Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) and Hannah Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) each netted their second goals of the match in the period. Annika Bergesen (West Jordan, Utah / Golden West College) would add a backhand strike near the end of the half to put UCI up, 8-3.

The pace slowed through the second half as Michaela Pierandozzi (La Serna / Whittier HS) scored the only tally of the third quarter powering a shot from center forward for her second of the match.

Each team would net another in the fourth for the 10-4 final. Avetoom would finish with 10 saves, eight of them coming in the second half. The Aggies were held to just four goals, their lowest total on the season, while also having their eight-match win streak snapped.

UCI has now won eight straight and will face off with Pacific Sun. Apr. 8th at 12:00 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
