IRVINE, Calif. --- The No. 6 Anteaters hung around with No. 2 UCLA, but the Bruins held on for a 10-6 Saturday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
UCI (21-6, 4-0) started off with a big first quarter. A breakaway goal from Annika Bergesen (West Jordan, Utah / Golden West College) and snap-shot off the bar from Danielle Warde (Huntington Beach / Edison HS) gave UCI a 2-0 lead after one.
UCLA (17-2, 5-1) got on the board early in the second, and the teams would fight for the lead throughout before Hannah Croghan's (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) touch shot of Caitlin Dement's outstretched arm would put UCI up, 4-3, into the half.
KK Clark took over in the third quarter. After a pair of goals in the second, she would connect on two early scores, one a penalty shot, to give UCLA the 5-4 lead. The Bruins would increase the lead to 7-4, but Warde connected on a cross-pool pass to Katie Croghan (Yorba Linda / Rosary HS) waiting on the doorstep to slam home a 6-on-5 goal with five seconds remaining in the quarter to make it 7-5.
UCLA's defense held strong in the fourth. The lead stretched to 9-5 on KK Clark's fifth goal. Devin Crothers (Riverside / Poly HS) scored late in the quarter, but UCLA would run out the clock for the 10-6 win.
Jillian Yocum (Riverside / Poly HS) played well in net making numerous saves on difficult shots along with an aggressive mentality to swipe away countless entry passes.
UCI remains winless against the Bruins in 14 matchups, and it also snapped the 'Eaters' nine-game win streak.
UCI wraps up the regular season Thurs. Apr. 19th with a 7:00 p.m. primetime match against rival Long Beach State for a chance to go undefeated in conference for the second consecutive year at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
