IRVINE, Calif. --- The 'Eaters couldn't capitalize on their doubles point win as the visiting Denver University Pioneers racked up a big singles day for the 5-2 win Sunday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The doubles pair of Fabian Matthews (Newport Beach / Corona del Mar HS) and Shuhei Shibahara (Ranchos Palos Verdes / Peninsula HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win to put UCI (2-15, 0-1) up early, 1-0.
The match was tied 2-2 after a Sam Gould (Hamilton, New Zealand / St. Kentigren College Prep) sweep along with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 from No. 54 Denver.
After first-set wins, the Anteaters looked in prime position to close out, but Matthews, Jon Kazarian (Ranchos Palos Verdes / Peninsula HS) and Mika DeCoster (Ladera Ranch / Laurel Springs HS) all dropped their final sets giving way to a Pioneers' victory.
UCI has a pair of matches this coming week starting off with a trip to LMU for a 1:30 match Thurs. Apr. 5th before it returns home to host UC Riverside, Sat. Apr. 7th, at 1:00 p.m.
