NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine made it out of Northridge with a Big West win thanks to a goal from newcomer Annika Bergesen (West Jordan, Utah / Golden West College) with 41 seconds left to lift the 'Eaters over Cal State Northridge.
No. 17 CSUN (14-15, 0-1) struck first a little over 30 seconds into the match. No. 6 UC Irvine (18-5, 1-0) roared back with five consecutive goals. The Matadors closed the gap, but Jessy Cardey (Riverside / Poly HS) netted her 54th goal of the season with ten seconds left in the half to give UCI the 6-3 lead.
CSUN flipped the script and overpowered the 'Eaters in the third period, a period UCI normally excels at, to make it just a one-goal match heading into the fourth.
The Matadors tied it up from a pair of goals by Jenny Jamison, who had four in the match to lead all scorers. CSUN would take the lead back with 3:20 left, 10-9. UCI responded quickly to tie the match with three minutes left before Bergesen hoisted the go-ahead strike with just 41 seconds remaining. UCI's stout defense took over not allowing a shot-on-goal in the final seconds.
UCI looks to build some momentum off of its third win of the season over CSUN as it heads to UCSB tomorrow for a 12:00 p.m. match against the Gauchos.
