IRVINE, Calif. --- The Anteaters were up to the Cougars' challenge take them down, 6-1, at sunny Anteater Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
Doubles action was neck-and-neck throughout. Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) and Marivick Mamiit (Los Angeles / College of William & Mary) teamed up for the first time, but were upended in the No. 3 slot, 8-6. The remaining two matches went overtime as Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnaisum) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) managed to get UC Irvine (2-2) back in it with 9-7 win. Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) and Hannah Holladay (La Jolla / La Jolla HS) bounced around a bit in the No. 1 slot before taking over for the 9-8 win after a 7-1 tiebreaker to take the doubles point.
Smith and Goettsching each won soundly in singles play. Smith went 6-2,6-4 just behind Goettsching's 6-2,6-2 to give the 'Eaters a 3-0 lead. BYU (0-2) managed a point as Mamiit battled by lost the match, 6-4,6-4, to close the gap to 3-1.
The remaining matchups went three sets. Holladay won her first set 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-3. Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) and Byron each won their second sets to tie their matches up. Facey was the first to come through with a 6-2 final set for the point and the win for the 'Eaters.
Holladay (6-1) and Byron (6-1) finished out their sets as well to secure the 6-1 win for UCI.
The 'Eaters jumped back to 2-2 overall and win the first of four consecutive home matches. Next they take on Hawaii, Thurs. Feb. 9th at 1:30 p.m., followed by Wyoming, Sat. Feb. 11th at 11:00 a.m.
