No. 4 Stanford Upends No. 2 UC Irvine

Irvine, Calif. – No. 4 Stanford upended No. 2 UC Irvine, 3-0 (32-30, 25-15, 25-23) at the Bren Events Center Friday.

The Cardinal improve to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the MSF, while UCI goes to 9-3 on the year and 5-3 in league play. 

Kevin Tillie was the lone Anteater in double-digit kills with 10. Carson Clark followed with eight kills and Jeremy Dejno had six kills. Scott Kevorken and Dan McDonnell each recorded four kills and two total blocks. Will Thomas totaled six digs and Daniel Stork recorded 37 assists.

Stanford was led by Brian Cook with 15 kills, hitting .591 (15-2-22). Brad Lawson and Steven Irvine recorded 12 kills each. Erik Shoji had 15 digs, while Eric Mochalski had a match-best eight total blocks.

Stanford bettered UCI in hitting (.463-.22), blocking (9-5) and digging (33-24).  UCI had 7 aces to Stanford's 2.

UCI led 22-16 in the first set before the Cardinal rallied on five blocks to tie the score at 25-25. Stanford then held off eight set points before an Anteater service error was followed by a kill by Steven Irvin to give the Cardinal the 32-30 win. UCI fired four aces, but had five service errors and hit just .195. Stanford out-blocked UCI, 7-0 and hit .400.

In the second set Stanford cruised to a 25-25 victory, hitting .565 (14-1-23). The Cardinal used a pair of Brad Lawson kills to go ahead 8-6 and would never trail again. UCI committed seven service errors in the set.

Stanford held a 17-12 lead in the third set before UCI began to chip away, out-scoring the Cardinal 6-1 to tie the score at 18-18 on a Jeremy Dejno ace. After trading points to get to 20-20 a UCI service error was followed by a Brian Cook kill to give Stanford a 22-20 advantage.  A kill by Zack La Cavera and a Stanford attack error knotted the score at 22-22, but Cook and Lawson put away consecutive kills for match point, 24-22. After a Cardinal service error, Eric Mochalski recorded a kill to give Stanford the 25-23 victory and 3-0 sweep.

The Anteaters will host No. 12 Pacific tomorrow (Feb. 18) at 7:00 p.m. in Crawford Court.
