
Idaho Uses Long Ball To Beat UC Irvine, 73-55

Irvine, Calif. – The University of Idaho knocked down 12 three-pointers, including seven in the second half, to help the Vandals defeat UC Irvine, 73-55, in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center Wednesday.
In the first half, Idaho lead 19-10 at 9:02 before the Anteaters used a 14-5 run which was capped by a Vanessa Aguilar three-pointer to tie the game at 24-24 with 2:41 remaining. Idaho would knock down back-to-back three-pointers and UCI's Cheyenne Cathey would hit a basket underneath to end the scoring as the Vandals would lead 30-26 at the intermission.
Idaho went on an 8-3 spurt, which included a pair of threes, to open the second half and expand the lead to 38-29 with 17:48 left. The Anteaters would get as close as 44-41 on a Camille Buckley layup at 8:44, but Idaho would hit a three-pointer followed by five more points to bring the advantage back to 11 (52-41) with 7:07 remaining. With UCI trying to rally at 5:23 down by 6 (52-46), the long ball was once again the answer as the Vandals hit consecutive threes to push the cushion to 58-46 at 4:31. Idaho would drain seven three-pointers in the final 20 minutes to solidify the victory.
Junior forward Camille Buckley led UC Irvine with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Kelly Meggs had nine points and Cheyenne Cathey and Vanessa Aguilar each chipped in six points apiece. Senior forward Pernilla Hanson had a career-high four blocks to go with five points and four rebounds.
Idaho made a season-high 26 baskets on a season-high 71 attempts (36.6%) and shot a season-best 48.4 percent (12-36) from long distance. The Vandals committed just seven turnovers and out-rebounded UCI, 48-35.
Orange County players led Idaho paced by Christina Salvatore from Canyon High School who topped all players with a career-high 20 points, hitting a career-best six three-pointers. The freshman from Anaheim also added seven rebounds and three assists. Villa Park High School's Connie Ballestero added a career-high 15 points, while Krissy Karr from Orange Lutheran High School had a season-high 11 points and a game and season-high nine assists. Alyssa Charlston also had 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds in the Vandal win.
Both teams are now 2-6 on the season.
UCI will host CSU Bakersfield Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
