LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Jacob Mourer and Justin Papa scored three goals each, but ninth-ranked UC Irvine was edged by No. 10 UC San Diego, 12-11, in a non-conference game at Canyonview Pool in La Jolla Thursday night.
Mourer and Papa scored a pair of goals apiece in the first half as the 'Eaters (14-10) led 7-5 at halftime.
The Tritons (14-7) pulled even at 9-9 after three quarters, but UCI's Alan Robertson (5:37) and Nick Pfeil (4:58) opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals to give the 'Eaters an 11-9 lead.
UCSD's Josh Stiling drew the Tritons within 11-10 on a goal with 4:39 remaining, then Brian Donohoe tied the game at 11-11 on a score at the 1:44 mark and scored the game-winning goal with 30 seconds left.
Robertson and Pfeil added two goals each for UCI, and Alex Kazmier had 13 saves in goal.
Stiling led UCSD with three goals.
The 'Eaters return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Sunday, traveling to Long Beach State for a noon game at the 49ers' Campus Pool.
