
Jasmine Bernard Records 18 Points In 63-53 Loss At San Diego State

San Diego, Calif. – San Diego State scored 40 points in the paint as the Aztecs beat UC Irvine, 63-53 at Viejas Arena Wednesday.
San Diego State evens its record to 1-1, while UCI falls to 0-2
In a slow starting first half, UC Irvine led 7-6 at 12:03 before San Diego State went on an 8-0 run to lead 14-7 at 8:32. The Anteaters would close within three (16-13), but the Aztecs would score seven unanswered to go up 23-13 at 3:50. Cheyenne Cathey sparked a 9-0 Anteater run with back-to-back three pointers that were followed by three consecutive Jennifer Tsurumoto free throws to close 23-22 with 2:15 left before intermission. SDSU ended the half with five points to lead 27-22.
The Aztecs would out-score UCI 14-4 to start the second stanza and open a 41-26 advantage at 14:49. UCI scored its first basket of the half on an Anete Klintsone layup at 13:23. and with 12 minutes remaining, it was UCI's lone basket (1-11), while San Diego State was shooting 54.5% (6-11) and the Anteaters only trailed by 11 (41-30).A three-pointer by Vanessa Aguilar narrowed UCI's deficit to eight (51-43) with 6:09 left, but SDSU would score the next eight to push the Aztec lead back to 59-43 at 4:39.
Forward Jasmine Bernard led UCI with a season-high 18 points on 9-17 shooting from the floor. Forward Pernilla Hanson recorded nine points and four steals, while forward Cheyenne Cathey added six points, both season-highs. Forward Camille Buckley led the team with seven rebounds followed by forward Methlyn Onogomuho grabbed six boards. Besides Bernard, UCI's other four starters were a combined 3-26 from the floor.
For the game, UCI was 18-61 (29.5) from the field and 12-18 (66.7) from the free throw line. The Anteaters knocked down five three-pointers. The teams were deadlocked in rebounds at 39 apiece. UCI had 21 offensive rebounds and recorded 20 second chance points.
San Diego State's Erimma Amarikwa led all players with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Courtney Clements had 13 points and Chelsea Hopkins added 10 points. Both players also recorded six rebounds. The Aztecs ended the night shooting 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field.
UCI hosts Nevada in the home opener Saturday (Nov. 17) at 4:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
