'Eaters with Best Big West Finish in 6 Years

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine finished third at the Big West Conference Championship in Riverside Saturday morning, the program's best finish in six years.
The 'Eaters totaled 83 points to equal a third-place finish at the 2006 meet. Cal Poly won the title for the second straight year with 25 points and UC Santa Barbara was second with 48.
UCI junior Steven Melena placed fourth with a time of 24:16.8 over 8,000 meters at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course, the top finish for an Anteater individual in the past 19 years since Daniel Galindo was fourth at the 1993 meet.
Chris Frias led a 1-2-3 Cal Poly finish with a winning time of 24:10.0.
UCI sophomore Alex Tebbe placed 11th in 24:36.7 while seniors Sam Hyams (24:52.2) and Rex Nelson (25:22.6) were 15th and 23rd, respectively.
Junior Andrew Snyder finished 33rd (25:50.4), senior Nick Osborne was 41st (26:12.8), sophomore Amir Shirif 42nd (26:15.7) and redshirt freshman Riley Martin 56th (28:00.7).
UCI is back in action Nov. 9 in the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, Wash.
