Steven Melena Leads 'Eaters to First in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Junior Steven Melena's second-place finish sparked UC Irvine to the team victory at the Highlander Invitational Saturday.
Melena covered 6,000 meters in 17:45.8 at the UC Riverside Agricultural/Operations Course as Seth Totten of the host Highlanders won the race in 17:41.0.
UCI, with five runners in the top nine spots, won the team title with 30 points, Wyoming was second with 41 and UCR third with 63.
Anteater sophomore Alex Tebbe placed fifth in 17:57.8, senior Nick Osborne was sixth in 18:00.1 and senior Sam Hyams eighth in 18:03.5.
Tommy Newton-Neal finished ninth (18:05.1), Andrew Snyder was 12th (18:17.0) and Amir Shirif 15th (18:27.1).
The 'Eaters compete at the Titan Invitational in Fullerton Friday before returning to the UCR Ag/Ops Course for the Big West Conference Championship Oct. 27.
