UC Irvine's Dylan Axelrod Called Up by Chicago White Sox

IRVINE, Calif. --- Anteater right-hander Dylan Axelrod has been added to the Chicago White Sox's 40-man roster.

Axelrod, who played for UC Irvine in 2006-07, was 9-7 on the mound in two seasons for the Anteaters. He pitched 121 2/3 innings, striking out 122 while posting a 4.22 ERA. He also has four career saves, all of which were recorded in 2007.

Working the majority of his innings in relief, Axelrod keyed several wins in the Anteaters' 2007 season that culminated in the program's first trip to the College World Series.

Two of Axelrod's four saves his senior year came against Cal State Fullerton, ranked 12th at the time, and gave the Anteaters their first series win over the Titans since 1980.  In the series opener, Axelrod entered the game in a no-out, bases-loaded jam and preserved the lead after yielding an RBI groundout. Axelrod then returned in the series finale and pitched three scoreless innings for his third save.

Axelrod was a prominent figure in the team's NCAA Tournament run. He pitched in five of the team's eight post-season games and did not allow a run in four of the five contests. His longest outing in the post-season came against the Titans at the College World Series, where he pitched the final 4 2/3 innings of a 5-4, 13-inning win by the 'Eaters. Axelrod held CSF scoreless, struck out seven and yielded just one hit to collect his sixth win that year.

Axelrod was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2007 Major League Draft. He is the third Anteater from UCI's new era of baseball, to join a major-league club. Axelrod's former teammate Bryan Petersen (2005-07) is currently an outfielder with the Florida Marlins and was called up in May of 2010. Petersen is currently hitting .285, with 39 hits, and is riding a six-game hitting streak.
