UC Irvine Hosts Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday
September 07, 2011 | Men's Cross Country
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine hosts the Asics/UCI Invitational Saturday (Sept. 10) at the Anteater Recreation Center (ARC) Fields.
A total of 790 men and women are entered. Four races are scheduled to accommodate the large field:
8:15 a.m. – Women's Race #1 (5,000 meters)
8:55 a.m. – Women's Race #2 (5,000 meters)
9:25 a.m. – Men's Race #1 (8,000 meters)
10:00 a.m. – Men's Race #2 (8,000 meters)
The Anteater men's team will be in Race #1 at 9:25 a.m.
UCI head coach Vince O'Boyle, in his 30th season with the 'Eaters, is looking forward to his team's first meet of the season.
"I think the men's team is being underrated by some," O'Boyle said. "The runners all had very good track seasons and put in a strong summer of training to prepare for this cross country season.
"I feel as the season develops, we will see this team come together and be one of the top teams in the Big West Conference."
O'Boyle is looking to leadership from senior Brennen Halliday, redshirt junior Rex Nelson and sophomore Steven Melena.
Halliday placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Big West Track & Field Championships in May.
Melena was 24th at last year's Big West Cross Country Championships and Nelson was 28th at the 2009 league meet.
The Anteaters travel to Mammoth for a week of training following Saturday's meet and return to competition Sept. 24 at the Stanford Invitational.
