UC Irvine Sweeps Beijing To Start Irvine International Volleyball Tournament

Irvine, Calif. -- The UC Irvine men's volleyball team swept Beijing BAIC Motor, 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 29-27) on the first day of the Irvine International Volleyball Tournament presented by ST/COMP Quiksilver at Crawford Court Monday.
A strong serving effort helped UCI to only its second victory all-time at the International Volleyball Tournament.
In the first set, UCI used back-to-back aces by Daniel Stork to go ahead 22-20 and the Anteaters went on to a 25-22 win.
UCI jumped out to a 4-0 start and scored seven straight points to open a 19-8 lead in the second set as 'Eaters would win 25-15.
In the third set, UCI let a 21-18 lead slip away as the Chinese team scored three straight to knot the score at 21-21. Beijing would take the 23-22 advantage before a Carson Clark kill was followed by an Austin D'Amore service ace to give the Anteaters match point 24-23. Beijing would rally to score the next two to keep the set alive. Teams would trade points before a Clark kill was followed by a Jeremy Dejno kill to end the match, 29-27.
In earlier matches, Sada Cruzeiro (Brazil) defeated Shanghai Tang Dynasty (China) 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 27-25 and Korean Air Jumbos (Korea) beat Quiksilver (USA) 34-32, 27-25, 21-25, 25-22. The Quiksilver team features former UCI greats Taylor Wilson, Jon Steller, Paul Spittle and Ty Loomis.
The Anteaters will take on the Toray Arrows from Japan at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 27)
