Hat-Tricks for Trio of UCI Alums in Team USA's Win over Canada

SHANGHAI, China --- UC Irvine alums Ryan Bailey, Tim Hutten and Jeff Powers scored three goals each as the USA Men's National Team defeated Canada, 17-4, in the FINA World Championships at Shanghai Sunday.

With the victory, the U.S. now faces Hungary in a quarterfinal Tuesday in a rematch of the gold-medal game at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Hutten and Powers scored the first two goals for the Americans Sunday and Bailey's initial score gave the U.S. a 4-1 lead in the opening quarter.

Bailey scored to put the Americans up 7-2 in the second quarter. Hutten scored on a power play with 2:17 left in the period for a 10-2 lead before Bailey capped his hat-trick for an 11-2 halftime lead.

Powers and Hutten scored back-to-back goals late in the third quarter, giving the U.S. a 15-4 lead entering the final period. Powers scored the final goal of the game in the fourth quarter. 

Powers and Hutten each scored on all three of their shots while Bailey was 3 for 6 in the game.

Bailey has played on the last three U.S. Olympic teams, Powers the past two and Hutten was on the 2008 squad. The three alums each earned multiple All-America honors while competing for the `Eaters.
