UC Irvine Falls to Virginia, 6-0, at Charlottesville Super Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- UC Irvine fell to top-seeded Virginia, 6-0, in game one of the Charlottesville Super Regional Saturday at Davenport Field.
Game two of the best-of-three super regional is Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (PT) on ESPNU and KUCI/88.9 FM.
The Anteaters, who had won game one in each of their last two super regionals, managed just four singles Saturday off Cavalier pitchers Danny Hultzen and Cody Winiarski.
The left-handed Hultzen, the second pick overall by the Seattle Mariners in the Major League Baseball Draft earlier in the week, went 5.1 innings to improve to 12-3 on the season. He struck out three, walked three, hit a batter and allowed three hits.
Winiarski pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up just one hit.
UCI junior right-hander Matt Summers, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Minnesota Twins, fell to 11-3 with the loss. He threw 6.0 innings, striking out three and walking one while yielding nine hits and five earned runs.
D.J. Crumlich, Drew Hillman, Jordan Leyland and Jordan Fox each had a single for the `Eaters (42-17).
The Cavaliers (53-9) turned three double plays to thwart Anteater scoring chances, including 5-3-4-2 to end the top of the first when UCI had runners at second and third with one out. UCI, which put runners on in every inning except the fifth, was unable to come up with the clutch hit and left eight stranded.
Virginia scored twice in the third inning on RBI singles by John Hicks and Hultzen.
Jared King's towering, three-run home run to left in the sixth extended the Cavaliers' lead to 5-0. He had three of Virginia's 12 hits in the win.
Virginia added a run in the seventh on Kenny Swab's single to left that scored Hicks from third.
The sold-out game (5,050) included a 1 hour, 23-minute weather delay in the top of the fourth inning.
