Irvine, Calif. – Beijing BAIC Motor defeated a youthful UC Irvine team, 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) in the seventh place match at the Irvine International Volleyball Tournament presented by ST/COMP Quiksilver Saturday at Crawford Court.
Underclassman ruled the court with sophomores Connor Hughes, Jeremy Dejno, Colin Mehring, and Daniel Stork joining freshmen Zack La Cavera and Michael Brinkley and senior Dan McDonnell for most of the match.
The Anteaters finish the third annual tournament with a 1-4 record, while Beijing picks up its first win and finishes in seventh place with a 1-4 mark.
UCI went on a 7-3 run in the first set to take a 17-15 lead capped by a Connor Hughes kill off an overpass.and a Hughes and Dan McDonnell block. The Anteaters held a 24-22 advantage before Beijing had a kill followed by an Anteater attack error to knot the score at 24-24. The teams would swap points until Jeremy Dejno put away a kill and had a block to end the set 27-25.
China scored four straight to go ahead 14-12 in the second set and continued to lead 17-15. UCI had a kill by Hughes and a Dejno block to tie the set at 17-17. Beijing responded with the next two points followed by the Anteaters scoring two in a row to keep the game deadlocked at 19-19. Tied at 21 all, China outscored UCI, 4-2 to win the set 25-23.
Behind the serving of Dejno, which included two aces, the Anteaters jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set. Beijing then went on an 8-2 spurt to open an 11-9 lead. China was ahead 14-11 before a service error, a triple block by Stork, Mehring and Dejno was followed by a La Cavera service ace to get UCI even at 14-14. Three consecutive kills gave Beijing a 23-20 lead and they would win the game 25-22.
The fourth set started much like the third set with UCI leading 7-4 and again 9-5 on the strength of four blocks. A 6-1 run gave China its first lead of the game, 11-10. Beijing went on an 8-2 run to open a 19-13 cushion. That was all they would need as Beijing won the set 25-18.
The Anteaters return to action hosting Brandon University in an exhibition match on Dec. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Crawford Court.
