· UC Irvine drew twice last week playing one match at home and one on the road:
+Â UCI tied at San Diego in a scoreless draw despite healthy advantages all along the scoring like outshooting the Toreros 15-5 and earning six more corners
+Â UCI's home opener ended with a late draw vs. Washington. After conceding on a first-of-its-kind indirect free kick in the 33rd minute, the 'Eaters banded together to hold UW scoreless, and a team effort off an 87th-minute free kick put home the equalizer by
Mia Colombini
· Nine Anteaters have made their debuts for UC Irvine this season. Three appeared in starting lineups -
Ariane Haysman Boaler,
Trinity Morales, and
Fiona Shin. True freshmen Shin has been joined by other true freshmen
Sophia Speziale,
Jasmyne Wheeler,
Mara Cochon,
Gianna Costello, and second-year freshmen
Amelia Sitton and
Alissey Fang
· Many Anteaters put up firsts this season starting with Shin's first career goal, point, and game-winner at Grand Canyon. Pickelle followed her with her first goal and point. Morales played back home and delivered her first goal and point for UCI, first collegiate point since 2022.
·Â
Laurynn Ziller has gotten the call in net for her first career starts. She earned her first career win in the opener over Grand Canyon and first shutout last week at San Diego. She has 11 saves to this point while standing top 50 in the nation in minutes played and top two in the Big West when it comes to goals-against-average and save percentage
· UCI's team effort for Sunday's equalizer came with two assists doubling the team's total on the season.
Chifumi Sasaki's set piece started it with her first assist of 2025, and
Ella Colombini fed it along to her sister for her first point since her freshman season
Thursday at the Hornets
· UC Irvine and Sacramento State meet for the final time before they become conference foes next season. Previously, the sides have met one other time back in 1994 in a decisive 6-0 home win for the Anteaters
· The Hornets welcome UC Irvine for their home opener and first of four straight at home. They'll also match up with Hawai'i, CSUN, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis from the Big West. Sac State started up with shutout wins at Pacific and over Oregon in Hawai'i for their tournament before falling to Central Arkansas to finish the weekend in Hawai'i. They've gotten four goals from four different scorers led by shot-taking juniors Lexi Schroeder and Tea Reyes
Sunday at the Dons
· UC Irvine and San Francisco are back for a second straight season. UCI holds a 6-4-1 edge all-time. USF is coming off a five-win season, and started slowly in losses at #7 Stanford (0-7) and Cal (2-3), but bounced back with a 2-0 win in the home opener over #18 Texas Tech
· San Francisco flipped the script with a come-from-behind 2-1 win a year ago stopping a string of seven straight unbeaten, six straight wins, and five straight wins under coach Juniper in the series. A
Mia Colombini golazo in the 43rd minute had UCI up, but returner Kaitlyn Sasadeusz's second half brace gave them a win including the winner with 12 seconds remaining
· The Dons won last year behind Sasadeusz's two goals, and she has three of the team's four goals so far in 2025. She's flanked by Lindsey Chau, Kate Zimmerman, and Olivia Lukrofka who all had multiple goals last year. Freshman Tyra Bengtsson-Stenseth from Norway has weathered the early season in net playing every minute and going 1-1 against ranked foes
