UC Irvine Blanks Oakland, 7-0, For Third Straight Win

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine (4-4, 1-1) swept Oakland (3-5), 7-0, inside Anteater Tennis Stadium for their third consecutive win.

The Anteaters collected the doubles point as Carolyna Fowler and Yen Nhi Huynh took down the Golden Grizzles, 6-1, on court two. Nour Khayat and Maily Huynh took care of business on court three, battling for the 6-4 victory. The duo of Fowler and Y. Huynh improve to 5-0 on the year as a pairing while Khayat and M. Huynh earned their second straight victory (2-1).

Y. Huynh was first to finish on the individual side, going 6-1, 6-2, over Edie Hammond at No. 4 before M. Huynh ousted Josie Ward, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 to put UCI up 3-0. Junior Amanda Perez clinched the win for the 'Eaters with her 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot.

UCI continued to pile on three more wins, but Oakland did not make it easy, taking the match to extra points on both court two and six. Both Carolyna Fowler (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) and Bella Pitchford (5-7, 7-5, 10-6) came out on top after being threatened in their respective contests.

FROM HEAD COACH ELIZABETH FERRIS SMITH
"Oakland No. 1 doubles and No. 1 and No. 2 singles had the ability to truly play big and dictate play. I think it took a little time to get used to, but once we did, we played confidently and composed. Big doubles win for court three, they're starting to find their stride and play well as a pair. I'm proud of Lyna's and Bella's comeback and how hard Amanda was willing to work for each point. We are showing improvement and are excited for our upcoming trip."

FROM THE PLAYERS
"I loved the energy Lyna and I had in doubles. We played each point with a purpose and had a quick win. Going into singles, I just made my opponent work for every point and stayed consistent throughout. I think that this game was an important building block and keep improving. Let's take the momentum to the next game! Go 'Eaters!!" –Yen Nhi Huynh

"Coming into this match, I wasn't sure how a team that usually plays indoors would compete, but the team did really well to counteract their flat balls. I was really happy with my performance with Nour, getting our second win of the season. In my singles match, I came in with confidence and ended with the win. The team's energy as a whole was really high, and I was really proud of our sweep. I want to continue this momentum into our matches against New Mexico State and UTEP. Go 'Eaters!"
