Avery Shoots 67; Sits In Third At Golfweek Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo. – UC Irvine freshman Alona Avery shot a career-best 67 on the second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic and sits in third place individually heading into the final round.

Avery carded seven birdies on the Red Sky Golf Club Fazio Course, including five on the back nine with three consecutive on holes 11-13. Avery's 36-hole total of 136 (69-67) ranks tied for second all-time, joining Jane Chin who did it twice. Only Chin has a lower 36-hole score, firing a 134 at the 2008 Kent Youel Invitational. Avery leads the field on Par 4s, going -6 and shares the lead with 11 birdies overall.

Avery trails Eastern Michigan's Savannah de Bock and of Eastern Michigan and Sacramento State's Caitlin Maurice by one shot (135) with 18 holes to play.

Katherine Gerbing shot a one-under Par 71 Tuesday and is tied with fellow freshmen and Katelyn Kong (70-75) for 19th with a score of 145.

Junior Jasmine Chen is tied for 61st with a score of 153 (76-77), while freshman Apple Zheng is tied for 76th at 158 (79-79).

The Anteaters are in sixth place with a two-round score of 579 (289-290). As a team, UCI was even-par on Par 3s to lead the tournament field.
