Box Score  PULLMAN, Wash. – Outside hitter Marianna Bertolone had a match-high 12 kills in UC Irvine's 3-0 loss to No. 8 BYU at the Cougar Challenge in Bohler Gym on the campus of Washington State.

Along with Bertolone's 12 kills, the outside hitter added four digs and an ace. She recorded an ace in all but one match this season and leads the team with 10.

UCI hit a season-low .020 (29-27-100), watching the Cougars hit an efficient .363 clip (41-8-91). Each team had 37 digs, while the Anteaters out-aced BYU, 5-1. BYU out-blocked UCI, 13-5, the most blocks by an opponent this season.

BYU remained undefeated 8-0, while UCI goes to 2-6 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Emma Spindt added six kills, while middle blocker Isabella Scarlett had four kills and two total blocks
>Middle blocker Ella Gardiner had a team-best three block assists
>Big West Freshman of the Week Nicole Feliciano had a team-high seven digs to go with 15 set assists and two block assists
>Kate Prior had 11 kills, hitting .588 (11-1-17) with five block assists

FIRST SET
>Back-to-back kills by the Cougars gave BYU a slight 6-4 lead
>A 7-0 run by BYU, which included three kills and four UCI errors extended the lead to 15-6
>Following an Isabella Scarlett kill, the Cougars kept rolling with seven more points, 22-7
>BYU would win 25-9, hitting .750 (15-0-20) while UCI hit -0.103

SECOND SET
>BYU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead
>UCI used kills by Marianna Bertolone and Emma Spindt and a block by Ella Gardiner and Hunter Riedl to get back in the set, 4-7
>The Cougars responded with the next three, 10-4
>A block by Nicole Feliciano and Ella Gardiner drew UCI within 7-11
>UCI had three straight on a BYU service and ball handling errors along with a block by Scarlett and Feliciano, 10-13
>A 5-0 spurt by the Anteaters capped by a solo block and two kills by Scarlett knotted the score at 15-15
>Another Scarlett kill tied the score at 17-17 before BYU had three in a row to move out to a 20-17 advantage
>A kill by Gardiner and an ace by Indy De Smet pulled UCI within 19-20, but the Cougars answered with the next two points to regain control, 22-19
>BYU would win three of the next four points, the last a block, to win the set, 25-21

THIRD SET
> A kill by Spindt started the match then after a BYU kill, Bertolone caught fire with three consecutive kills and an ace. Spindt added a kill before BYU called timeout, 5-1
>Two more kills by Bertolone and an ace by Jensen forced another BYU timeout, 9-2
>UCI held a 12-5 lead then BYU went on a 3-0 run to close to 12-8
>A block by Gardiner and Riedl was followed by a kill by Spindt, increasing the advantage to 17-11
>A kill by Bertolone and an ace by Lexi Gruszczynski made it 20-13
>A smash by Feliciano gave UCI a 21-15 lead only to watch BYU out-score the Anteaters 10-2 to win the set 25-23. Six of the BYU points came on UCI errors
