IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team completed their 2022-23 season with 11 wins and a whole host of notable moments and achievements from the young squad.
ON THE RECORD
The spring dual match season started with a 3-0 run by UCI, the best start to a season for the program since the 2018-19 season when they won the first four contests. The Anteaters swept both William Jessup (Jan. 20) and Cal State LA (Feb. 9) while defeating Portland State, 5-2, on Feb. 5.
UC Irvine dropped a Big West match out of the gate and finished 2-7 in Big West matchups. Their conference victories came over UC Riverside (6-1) and UC San Diego (4-3).
The season culminated in the Big West Championships in San Diego, Calif. with a first-round win over UCR for UCI (4-1) to advance to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.
UCI finished the year with an 11-9 overall record, the most total wins since the 2018-19 season.
SENIOR SALUTE
Alyssia Fossorier departs after playing five seasons for UC Irvine. Holding down the No. 2 singles position, Fossorier finished the year with an overall record of 6-9 in individual play. The graduate student played in five other matches, but they were left unfinished.
Fossorier competed at No. 2 doubles with fellow senior
Jenna Schlatter where they earned a 7-9 record at the second spot and picked up one win at No. 1.
NO. 1
Jenna Schlatter stepped into the No. 1 singles spot after the departure of
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico. Schlatter went 7-7 in dual match action and a team best 3-5 in conference play en route to All-Big West Honorable Mention nods. The senior had two unfinished contests on the season, leading them both at the time of competition.
Schlatter, the first-time team captain, will return to the young Anteater squad next season as a graduate student.
SISTER, SISTER
The sister duo of junior
Emily Fowler and freshman
Carolyna Fowler took charge of the doubles competition as they competed together at the No. 1 position. The pair opened dual play action with a 2-0 record before moving up to the spot where they tallied seven wins.
Â
C. Fowler was introduced to the singles line up against CSUN, defeating her opponent for the Anteaters lone point in the 6-1 loss. The freshman won four straight individual contests and ended the season with a 6-2 overall record, going 1-1 at the No. 5 position and 5-1 at the sixth.
Â
FEROCIOUS FRESHMEN
Eight freshmen were named to the roster in the fall with some of them making an immediate impact.
Asha Gidwani had a standout season, compiling an overall 11-6 record in singles play (3-1 at No. 2, 8-5 at No.3), and was the only individual to have double digit victories.
Amanda Perez competed at the No. 4 singles spot where she went 6-6. The duo of Gidwani and Perez competed together at No. 3 doubles for an incredible 12-4 record, 4-2 in conference play. They also won their one match that they competed at No. 2.
Â
Haily Huynh held steady at the No. 5 position, going 7-3. Huynh finished the year with an 8-8 overall record in dual action and competed at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles throughout the year.
Â
Larissa Teramura got experience at both the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches but spent a lot of her time at the sixth position. Teramura ended the 2023 campaign with an 8-8 overall record, 6-5 at No. 6 singles.
