· UC Irvine takes part in its third straight Big West Championship after finishing in a tie for sixth in the Big West standings; they were projected to finish third receiving three first-place votes. The Big West projected champion LBSU finished fourth with the champions, Cal State Fullerton, projected fourth.
· UCI's path began Sunday advancing past LBSU in a 4-1 penalty shootout with
Glo Hinojosa making a key save and
Marissa LeVine scoring the decisive PK. The 'Eaters then sent regular season champion Fullerton home Thursday, 1-0, on a 49th-minute
Erin Covey goal to give CSF their first home loss
·Â
Glo Hinojosa leads one of the stingier defenses in the Big West with 34 career wins, 29 career shutouts, and 217 career saves. Hinojosa stopped a penalty in the 4-1 shootout win Sunday to advance. She now has five penalty kick saves all-time with three in shootouts. The 'Eaters allowed 23 goals all year with nine coming in Big West matches allowing just 39 shots on goal
· UC Irvine's offense put home one more goal than it allowed all year, 24, with half coming in Big West matches, both middle of the pack. They're one of the higher-volume attacks with 108 total corners earned, second in the conference, and with the third-most shots in Big West matches all while being called for the second-least fouls in Big West action at 85.
·Â
Gianna Creighton has played over 7,000 minutes in her career, and is 1 of 11 active Anteaters to have played over 50 career matches. She set a program record Thursday with her 83rd career start, and her next match will be the 84th in her career to tie a UC Irvine record.
· UC Irvine's offense set some impressive marks at Bakersfield with four goals in a 3:20-span, three goals coming within 82 seconds of each other, and two 34 seconds apart.
Tati Fung didn't score, but she registered a program record four assists in the match.
All-Big West
· Season awards were handed out with five 'Eaters recognized. First-Teamers were
Tati Fung, her first honor, and
Alyssa Moore and
Kiera Smeenge with their third each.
Glo Hinojosa's third honor came on the Second Team, and Honorable Mention was
Gianna Creighton for her third career appearance
Sunday vs. the Mustangs - 1:00 PM
· The Mustangs and Anteaters return to the pitch after Cal Poly won, 2-1, earlier this year. UCI was without star keeper
Glo Hinojosa who was injured in the previous match. All-time, Cal Poly holds a 21-13-2 edge, but just 9-7 since coach Juniper took over for UCI. This is the fourth them they meet in the Fina with UCI 2-1 all-time including a win most recently in 2021.
· Cal Poly is 10-7-3 this year including four near defeats to teams in the Pac-12 or ranked. One of the better scoring teams they have 30 this year and two in each postseason match. They run alongside UCI in most stat categories outside the mere eight cautions picked up in 2023. Jessie Halladay and Kate Reedy each boast five goals with four from Annika Smith and multiple assists from eight different Mustangs. Mackenzie Samuel is clutch in goal with a backline that doesn't allow many shots on target
Big West Championship
· The 22nd Big West Championship moves to Fullerton and this UCI's 15th time and the third straight year winning each of the last two. Since the field expanded to six teams in 2022, UCI has been the 5-or-6-seed benefitting from the change to get in the field, and they've made the most of it reaching the Final in each season. A win Sunday would join Cal State Fullerton (2005-07, 2013-15) as the only programs to win three straight Big West Championships
