Tyler Wins Two Events at Spokane Indoor Challenge

SPOKANE, Wash. -
The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team picked up three event wins and a handful of top-10 marks at the inaugural Spokane Indoor Challenge Saturday at The Podium, which is also the site of the 2023 MPSF Championships.
 
Sophomore thrower Deandra Tyler was a double champion in the season-opening meet. She started the day in the weight throw where she established a personal-record 54-03.25 to move up three spots to No. 4 in school history. Tyler then came back for a three-foot victory in the shot put, notching a PR 48-00 which ranks third all-time.
 
Freshman Nyla Baker was also third in the shot put at 44-02.5. In the first meet of her collegiate career, Baker established the fifth-best mark in program history.
 
In the long jump, sophomore transfer Jolie Robinson was fifth overall with her leap of 18-02.5 putting her in a tie for fifth on UCI's all-time charts. Robinson also had the Anteaters' 10th-best high jump mark with a clearance of 5-01.25. Sophomore Reyna Johnson added a top-10 showing in the long jump (17-01.5).
 
On the track, junior Amari Fraser claimed the 60m hurdle title. After running a lifetime-best 8.88 in the prelims, Fraser saw an improvement in the final, crossing the finish line in 8.78. That mark is tied for ninth in the school record book. Johnson also took fourth overall at 8.92 seconds.
 
All three 'Eaters entered in the 800m secured a top-10 showing. Graduate student Emma McCarthy led the way with a personal-record 2:13.54, which ranks second in program history. Sophomore Alexis Alexander also moved into a tie for fifth all-time with a PR 2:14.44, while freshman Reina Kabbara clocked in at 2:24.19 in her collegiate debut.
 
In the 60m qualifying round, the Anteaters took the top two spots with freshman Samantha Bartz winning the race at 7.70 seconds and sophomore Aryel Coats posting a personal-best 7.77. The duo advanced to the prelims where Bartz, who was making her collegiate debut, bettered her time at 7.68 to tie for fourth in school history. She was also UC Irvine's top finisher in the 200m with her time of 25.34 ranking eighth on the all-time charts.
 
Sophomore Mia Marquez (58.67) and freshman Sienna Frederiksen (58.99) placed among the top-15 in the 400m.
 
Junior Cathy Salazar-Gasca paced the 'Eaters in the mile at 5:16.62 (11th), while junior McKenna Paulson had a top-eight showing in the 3000m (10:45.10).
 
Frederiksen, Marquez, Alexander and McCarthy closed out the meet with a fourth-place performance in the 4x400 relay, combining for a time of 3:54.31.
 
UC Irvine will be back in action, Jan. 27-28, at the UNM Team Open in Albuquerque.
