UC Irvine Finishes Fourth at UCR Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's cross country team placed fourth overall with three individuals in the top-20 at the UC Riverside 6K Invitational Saturday morning at the UCR Ag/Ops Course.
 
The Anteaters totaled 181 points to come in behind team champion Arizona (140), Cal Poly (141) and Southern Utah (149). They finished ahead of eight other Big West schools, including UC Santa Barbara (190), UC Riverside (236), Long Beach State (257) and UC Davis (261).
 
Sophomore Anna Vogtmann led the 'Eaters with a seventh-place showing in a large field of 264 runners. She completed the 6K course in a lifetime-best 20:24.6 to move up to No. 3 on UCI's all-time charts.
 
Sophomore Sameen Andar wasn't far behind in eighth as she clocked a one-minute personal-record 20:26.5. Her time ranks fourth in program history.
 
Fifth-year senior Hannah Chau added a top-20 performance in her season debut, crossing the finish line in 20:49.7 (19th). Chau currently ranks second in school history with a PR 20:16.9, which she ran at last year's Highlander Invitational.
 
Graduate student Evelin Meza (21:31.7) and sophomore Maggie Sczupak (21:47.2) were next up for the Anteaters in 72nd and 83rd, respectively. Sophomore Olivia Liuson (21:49.7) and junior Cathy Salazar-Gasca (22:02.8) rounded out UCI's top-seven. Sczupak and Liuson both registered personal bests.
 
In the second women's race of the day, the 'Eaters notched a runner-up team finish in the 5K Open. Sophomore Montgomery Allison was UC Irvine's top performer, placing 11th out of 254 with a personal-record 18:24.2. Sophomore Tea Akiaten (18:39.2) was also 19th, while classmate Diane Molina (18:44.1) was 29th.
 
UC Irvine will be off from competition until Saturday, Oct. 15, when it heads to Santa Clara for the Bronco Invitational.
