Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

'Eaters Fall at UC Davis, 66-51

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's basketball team saw its five-game win streak come to an end with a 66-51 loss to UC Davis Saturday at the University Credit Union Center.

The Anteaters (14-9, 9-3 Big West) got out to a slow start, scoring a season-low 18 points in the first half. The Aggies took advantage as they went up by 17 at the break. The 'Eaters, who had come back from big deficits before, were unable to pull it off once again as UCD came away with its 10th home victory.

UCI shot 32% from the field and was just 4-of-24 from beyond the arc. UC Davis, meanwhile, finished the afternoon at 47% overall and 39% from long distance. The Aggies also held a lopsided advantage at the free throw line where they were 17-of-25 compared to 5-of-9 for UC Irvine.

WHO STOOD OUT: Kayla Williams registered a team-high 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half. She also had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Sophia Locandro added eight points, and Chloe Webb had six. Hunter Hernandez contributed five points and three assists.

UCD's Cierra Hall led all players with 20 points. She was 5-for-6 from the field and 8-of-11 at the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED: UC Davis (11-9, 5-5 Big West) struck first, but Jayde Cadee answered with a steal and layup to knot the score at the 8:19 mark. The Aggies then pulled ahead for good with a three on their next possession. UCD went on to take a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Anteaters quickly brought it back within single digits as Naomi Hunt started the scoring in the second period. The two teams would trade buckets over the next four-plus minutes before UC Davis closed out the half on a 9-0 run for a 35-18 advantage.

The 'Eaters got their offense going after of the break, scoring more points in the third frame than they did in the entire first half. Williams led the way with 11 of the team's 19 points. After UC Davis went up by as many as 21, UCI began to chip away, closing the gap to 53-37.

The Anteaters continued to put up a fight in the fourth, bringing another 21-point deficit down to 13 in the final minutes but time was not on their side as the Aggies emerged with the 66-51 victory.

UP NEXT: UC Irvine has a quick turnaround as it returns to the Bren Events Center to host UC San Diego on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
