IRVINE, Calif. --- Fall academic honors were announced for 137 UC Irvine student-athletes with the 2021 Big West Fall All-Academic squad and Fall Dean's List honors.
 
Top teams in grade point average (GPA) were women's tennis and men's cross country as 15 sports finished with a team GPA above 3.0 in the fall.

Head coach Elizabeth Ferris' squad featured five student-athletes with a GPA at 3.67 or higher and had the highest GPA in the department.

"This team takes great pride in their studies and I'm so happy they are being recognized for all their efforts. This is quite an impressive accomplishment," praised coach Ferris.

Men's cross country led the men's squads, featuring three student-athletes at 3.8 or higher.

"We are very proud of our men's cross country team for their academic excellence this past fall," said distance coach Casey Kear. "This is the second consecutive quarter we have led the men's teams here at UCI and we look forward to chasing a third this winter. I think this past quarter is especially meaningful for our group as we moved past the challenges of remote learning and got back in-person. We saw some real improvements and breakthroughs for athletes that struggled last year and then our freshmen came in and had great starts!"

The Dean's List recognized 17 sports and 112 student-athletes in all led by 16 from the women's soccer program. To qualify for the Dean's List, individuals need 12 or more undergraduate graded units in a quarter with a GPA of 3.500 or better with graduate students not included.

Each of the Anteaters' fall sports had at least six representatives on the all-academic team. Four of the five squads had nine or more Anteaters with women's volleyball and women's soccer leading the way with 10 each.
 
To be eligible for the Big West All-Academic Team, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, complete one full year at their member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and compete in at least 50% of their team's contests. Baseball pitchers are exempt from any minimum participation requirements, while track & field student-athletes must have competed in either 50% of their team's meets or participated in the conference championship.
